A Fine Coronation Celebration

A Fine Coronation Celebration

There’s nothing the English love more than a good party, and even if you’re not a royalist, the King’s Coronation bank holiday weekend provides the perfect excuse to get together with friends and family. Our fingers are crossed for blue skies, providing the perfect canopy for our street soirées and garden parties. So, it’s time to dress the garden with bunting, throw confetti on the tables and start getting your royal menu ready!

The food and drinks…

Large sharing platters and canapés are our favourite when it comes to big parties – and this is a meal that must be fit for a King, so we’ve got to make sure it’s bursting with colour and flavour.

Get the party started with a glass of bubbles and raise a toast with our decadent Champagne Jean Boucton Grand Héritage 2007. So opulent and rich, whilst you could sip this one on its own, it’s a match made in heaven with canapés of duck parfait or aged comté with quince jelly. For something a little lighter, our Champagne Jean Boucton Cuvée Blanc de Blanc is refreshing and elegant, and pairs perfectly with British classics, like smoked salmon blinis, quails eggs and caviar, cheese and cucumber sandwiches, and mini coronation chicken bites.
Big grazing platters of cured meats, cheese, nuts and fruit and colourful salads are always a great idea at parties. Inject some summery flavours with roasted nectarines, fresh basil and burrata, mixed grains with massaged kale (trust us), pomegranate, feta and fresh herbs, and shaved asparagus, artichoke and parmesan, with a zingy lemon yoghurt dressing. Pair this with fruity rosé, like our Château Barbanau L’instant Rosé, the bold fruit and crisp acidity will compliment the cured meats, soft cheeses and fruit in these dishes perfectly.

If red is more your style, how about our René Bourgeon Les Pourriéres Pinot Noir. Light and fruity, the concentrated berry flavours go brilliantly with warm breads and chicken liver paté. Another great springtime wine is the  Philippe Viet Beaujolais; served slightly chilled (14°C), this fruit-focused wine with delicate spices is delicious paired with grilled meats and salty halloumi skewers if you’re firing up the BBQ.

When it comes to pudding, you can afford to be quintessentially British. Rhubarb trifle, Victoria sponge cake, strawberry roulade, lemon drizzle cake, and even scones, piled high with jam and thick clotted cream – but which one first?

What wine should you take to a Coronation party?
If you’re the guest and not the host, then you may be in need of a gift – and you can’t go wrong with a bottle of wine. If you’re after a showstopper, our Champagne Jean Bouton Premiére Cuvée is a beautifully complex and layered Champagne, and the fine acidity makes it the perfect partner to those seafood and caviar canapés.Just as delicious is our light and crisp Sauvignon Blanc, Henry Pellé Les Bornés 2021. The clean and restrained profile makes it a great pairing for delicate flavours like a mild goats cheese quiche or white fish.

If you like something with a little bit of spice the Charles Joguet Silénes 2018 Cabernet Franc is a slightly lighter style, with black fruit and subtle herbaceous notes. You could serve this one slightly chilled, too, alongside those quiches and tartlets or with a bountiful cheese platter.

Here’s to a wonderful Coronation celebration – cheers!
